In September 2008, Acer surpassed HP and Dell over worldwide notebook shipment. [9]

On August 27, 2007, Acer announced plans to acquire U.S. based rival Gateway Inc. for US$710 million. J.T. Wang, the company's chairman, said in a statement that the acquisition "completes Acer's global footprint, by strengthening our U.S. presence."[10] In January 2008, Acer announced that it had acquired a controlling interest of 75% of Packard Bell.[11]

Controversy and criticism
Acer has been the subject of lawsuits, notably from its rival, Hewlett-Packard. According to the lawsuit, Acer was infringing numerous technological patents, including power management in notebooks. Unleashed that Acer obtained patent designs which are registered by HP, without any approval and agreement. HP has filed damage claim of 3.2 Billion U.S. dollars against Acer for the infringement of patents rights. [12]

Acer America Corporation has previously had an unsatisfactory record with the United States Better Business Bureau. It is currently awaiting re-evaluation.

How to delete files and folders

First Method

This is the easiest method to delete files and folders in Windows.

1. You can use either Windows Explorer or My Computer to navigate to the file or folder you wish to delete.
* Using Windows Explorer: Open Windows Explorer (Left click Start then Programs then Accessories then Windows Explorer) or (Hold down the Windows key and press E)
* Using My Computer: Windows XP Users click Start then My Computer. All other Windows users double left click the My Computer icon on your desktop.
2. Navigate to the file or folder that you would like to delete.
3. Highlight the file or folder by left clicking it once.
4. Now press the Delete key on your keyboard.

Second Method

Fourth Method

This method can be used by Windows XP, and Windows 2003 users.

1. Open My Computer ((Left click Start/My Computer) or double click the My Computer icon on your desktop).
2. Navigate to the file or folder you want to delete.
3. Then highlight the file or folder by left clicking it once.
4. Now click Delete this file, or Delete this folder from the File and Folder Tasks menu in your Common Tasks toolbar.

5. A window will then popup asking for confirmation to send the file or folder to the Recycle Bin. Click Yes to move the file to the recycle bin or No to keep the file where it is.

How to Create a Partition using fdisk

Now that you have removed all of the partitions from your hard drive, it is now time to partition your hard drive. To partition a master hard disk, you will use the fdisk command. Fdisk is a DOS and Windows utility that is used to partition a hard disk, which is necessary before high- level formatting.

Below are the complete instructions to walk you through the process of creating partitions on your hard drive.

1.) Insert the Startup disk in the floppy disk drive, restart your computer. When the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup menu is displayed, select the Start computer without CD-ROM support menu option, and then press Enter.

At a command prompt, type fdisk, and then press Enter.

2.) Do you wish to enable large disk support?

Press Y and then press Enter. This will enable the FAT32 file system

3.) After you press Enter, the following fdisk options menu is displayed:

1. Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive
2. Set active partition
3. Delete partition or Logical DOS Drive
4. Display partition information
5. Change current fixed disk drive

**Note** that option 5 is available only if you have two physical hard disks in the computer.

4.) Press 1 to select the Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive menu option, and then press Enter.

5.) Press 1 to select the Create Primary DOS Partition menu option, and then press Enter.

6.) After you press Enter, you receive the following message: Do you wish to use the maximum available size for primary DOS partition?

A.) After you receive this message, use the following method:

B.) Press Y if you want all of the space on the hard disk to be assigned to drive C, press Y, and then press Enter. Go to Step 7

C.) Press N if you do not want all of the space on the hard disk to be assigned to drive C.

a.) If you select N then continue to follow these instructions.

b.) Enter the size of the partition you wish to make and then press Enter.

c.) Press ESC.

d.) Press 1 to select the Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive menu option, and then press Enter.

e.) Press 2 to select the Create Extended Partition menu option, and then press Enter.

f.) Press Enter to create an extended DOS partition that uses up the rest of the hard drive.

g.) Press ESC. After pressing ESC fdisk will automatically try to create a logical DOS drive.

h.) Enter the size of the second partition you wish to create and then press Enter.

i.) If you created your second partition to use the entire size of the Extended DOS Partition then go to Step 7.

J.) If not then repeat step h until you have used up the rest of the Extended DOS Partition then go to Step 7.

7.) Press ESC, and then press ESC to quit the fdisk tool and return to a command prompt.

8.) Reboot. You are now ready to format the partitions that you just created.

Starting Windows XP in Safe Mode

1.Click on Start and then Run.
2.In the text box in the Run window, type msconfig and click OK. This will open the System Configuration Utility program.

Note: Do not make changes in the System Configuration Utility other than those outlined here to avoid causing serious system issues. This utility controls a number of startup activities other than those involved with Safe Mode.

3.Click on the BOOT.INI tab located at the top of the System Configuration Utility window.
4.Check the checkbox next to /SAFEBOOT and click OK.
5.You will then be prompted to either Restart, which will restart the PC immediately, or Exit Without Restart, which will close the window and allow you to restart the PC manually.
6.After the restart, the PC will automatically boot into Windows XP Safe Mode.

Note: Windows XP will continue to boot into Safe Mode until the System Configuration Utility is configured to again boot normally.

7.When your work in Safe Mode is complete, click on Start and then Run. Type msconfig in the text box and click OK.

This will again open the System Configuration Utility program.

8.Choose the Normal Startup radio button and click OK.
9.You will then be prompted to either Restart, which will restart the PC immediately, or Exit Without Restart, which will close the window and allow you to restart the PC manually.
10.After the restart, the PC will boot into Windows XP normally and will continue to do so.

Everybody’s favorite open-source browser, Firefox, is great right out of the box. And by adding some of the awesome extensions available out there, the browser just gets better and better.

But look under the hood, and there are a bunch of hidden (and some not-so-secret) tips and tricks available that will crank Firefox up and pimp your browser. Make it faster, cooler, more efficient. Get to be a Jedi master with the following cool Firefox tricks.

1) More screen space. Make your icons small. Go to View - Toolbars - Customize and check the “Use small icons” box.

2) Smart keywords. If there’s a search you use a lot (let’s say IMDB.com’s people search), this is an awesome tool that not many people use. Right-click on the search box, select “Add a Keyword for this search”, give the keyword a name and an easy-to-type and easy-to-remember shortcut name (let’s say “actor”) and save it. Now, when you want to do an actor search, go to Firefox’s address bar, type “actor” and the name of the actor and press return. Instant search! You can do this with any search box.

3) Keyboard shortcuts. This is where you become a real Jedi. It just takes a little while to learn these, but once you do, your browsing will be super fast. Here are some of the most common (and my personal favs):

* Spacebar (page down)
* Shift-Spacebar (page up)
* Ctrl+F (find)
* Alt-N (find next)
* Ctrl+D (bookmark page)
* Ctrl+T (new tab)
* Ctrl+K (go to search box)
* Ctrl+L (go to address bar)
* Ctrl+= (increase text size)
* Ctrl+- (decrease text size)
* Ctrl-W (close tab)
* F5 (reload)

4) Auto-complete. This is another keyboard shortcut, but it’s not commonly known and very useful. Go to the address bar (Control-L) and type the name of the site without the “www” or the “.com”. Let’s say “google”. Then press Control-Enter, and it will automatically fill in the “www” and the “.com” and take you there - like magic! For .net addresses, press Shift-Enter, and for .org addresses, press Control-Shift-Enter.

5) Tab navigation. Instead of using the mouse to select different tabs that you have open, use the keyboard. Here are the shortcuts:

* Ctrl+Tab (rotate forward among tabs)
* Ctrl+Shft+Tab (rotate to the previous tab)
* Ctrl+1-9 (choose a number to jump to a specific tab)

6) Mouse shortcuts. Sometimes you’re already using your mouse and it’s easier to use a mouse shortcut than to go back to the keyboard. Master these cool ones:

* Middle click on link (opens in new tab)
* Shift-scroll down (previous page)
* Shift-scroll up (next page)
* Ctrl-scroll up (decrease text size)
* Ctrl-scroll down (increase text size)
* Middle click on a tab (closes tab)

7) Delete items from address bar history. Firefox’s ability to automatically show previous URLs you’ve visited, as you type, in the address bar’s drop-down history menu is very cool. But sometimes you just don’t want those URLs to show up (I won’t ask why). Go to the address bar (Ctrl-L), start typing an address, and the drop-down menu will appear with the URLs of pages you’ve visited with those letters in them. Use the down-arrow to go down to an address you want to delete, and press the Delete key to make it disappear.

8) User chrome. If you really want to trick out your Firefox, you’ll want to create a UserChrome.css file and customize your browser. It’s a bit complicated to get into here, but check out this tutorial.

9) Create a user.js file. Another way to customize Firefox, creating a user.js file can really speed up your browsing. You’ll need to create a text file named user.js in your profile folder (see this to find out where the profile folder is) and see this example user.js file that you can modify. 10) about:config. The true power user’s tool, about.config isn’t something to mess with if you don’t know what a setting does. You can get to the main configuration screen by putting about:config in the browser’s address bar. See Mozillazine’s about:config tips and screenshots.

11) Add a keyword for a bookmark. Go to your bookmarks much faster by giving them keywords. Right-click the bookmark and then select Properties. Put a short keyword in the keyword field, save it, and now you can type that keyword in the address bar and it will go to that bookmark.

12) Speed up Firefox. If you have a broadband connection (and most of us do), you can use pipelining to speed up your page loads. This allows Firefox to load multiple things on a page at once, instead of one at a time (by default, it’s optimized for dialup connections). Here’s how:

* Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Type “network.http” in the filter field, and change the following settings (double-click on them to change them):
* Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
* Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
* Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to a number like 30. This will allow it to make 30 requests at once.
* Also, right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

13) Limit RAM usage. If Firefox takes up too much memory on your computer, you can limit the amount of RAM it is allowed to us. Again, go to about:config, filter “browser.cache” and select “browser.cache.disk.capacity”. It’s set to 50000, but you can lower it, depending on how much memory you have. Try 15000 if you have between 512MB and 1GB ram.

14) Reduce RAM usage further for when Firefox is minimized. This setting will move Firefox to your hard drive when you minimize it, taking up much less memory. And there is no noticeable difference in speed when you restore Firefox, so it’s definitely worth a go. Again, go to about:config, right-click anywhere and select New-> Boolean. Name it “config.trim_on_minimize” and set it to TRUE. You have to restart Firefox for these settings to take effect.

15) Move or remove the close tab button. Do you accidentally click on the close button of Firefox’s tabs? You can move them or remove them, again through about:config. Edit the preference for “browser.tabs.closeButtons”. Here are the meanings of each value:

* 0: Display a close button on the active tab only
* 1:(Default) Display close buttons on all tabs
* 2:Don’t display any close buttons
* 3:Display a single close button at the end of the tab bar (Firefox 1.x behavior)

Removing Cookies in Internet Explorer for Windows

- Close all open Internet Explorer Windows

- Click on the 'start' button

- Move up to 'Find' and click on 'Files and Folders'

- When the new window appears, type in the domain name of the board you are using into the 'containing text' field. (If the boards address was 'http://www.invisionboard.com/forums/index.php' you would enter 'invisionboard.com' without the quotes)

- In the 'look in' box, type in C:\Windows\Cookies and press 'Find Now'

- After it has finished searching, highlight all files (click on a file then press CTRL+A) and delete them.

- Your cookies should now be removed. In some cases you may need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

BIOS password removal

Removing the motherboard's battery and placing it back after 10-15 minutes is the best solution.
You can also try using the jumper that the motherboard has,and set it to clear the BIOS settings.

First turn off the computer of course,and get the power cable out of the 220V connector.Just to be sure.
Than open the side of your computer case and find the battery on the motherboard.
It looks like this,on 99% of motherboards:

Now get a small stick,or if you have small fingers,you can do it using them.
So get the stick/fingers and push the little clip on the battery-holder back,so the battery will pop-out.

Now,when the battery is out,leave it on a safe place where it can't get hurt.
Put it back after 10-15 minutes on the motherboard.
Just place it on it's place,and push it down slowly with your finger.Don't press it strongly.

When the battery is fitted in correctly,turn on the computer.
If you did everything fine,the BIOS password will be no longer there.
But all the BIOS settings will be set to default,so you'll need to set them again

This reduces the time window waits before killing apps that are not responding - you'd just close them normally anyway.

5. Convert FAT32 volumes to NTFS (Hard Drives)

NTFS is faster, more secure, and is more stable.

Steps:

1. Back up the drive's data
2. Click start and Run, type cmd and press enter to open a command prompt window
3. Type vol c: and press enter to find and note the volume label of partition.
(This assumes you're converting the C drive, replace it with the correct letter if you're converting another drive)
4. Type convert c: /fs:ntfs and press enter
5. When prompted, enter the volume you noted in step 3
6. Answer "Y" to the remaining question. The system will reboot and convert the volume.
The first reboot after conversion might take longer than usual, but this will only happen once.

1. Open regedit again
2. Set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTRO L\FILESYSTEM\NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreatrion to 1 and restart

8.3 filenames are only used by DOS and '95 programs. if you don't have 'em, get rid of the filenames.

7. Speed up searching by disabling ZIP file searching

1. Click start, open run, type in cmd and hit enter.

2. Type in "regsvr32c:\windows\system32\zipflrd.dll /u" and press enter. To re-enable. simply retype it without the "/u"

Searching zip files can take forever, so if you don't need it, don't use it.

How to Disable Registry Editor Editing Tool (RegEdit)

To disable the Registry Editor for currently logged on user:

3. Create a New -> Key named System.
