It owns the largest franchised computer retail chain in Taipei, Taiwan.[2] Acer is the third largest computer manufacturer in the world (by sales) after HP and Dell Inc.[3] and its product lineup includes desktops and laptops, as well as personal digital assistants (PDAs), servers and storage, displays, peripherals, and e-business services for business, government, education, and home users.

History
Multitech, founded by Stan Shih , his wife Carolyn Yeh, and a group of five others in 1976, was renamed Acer in 1987. It began with eleven employees and US$25,000 in capital. Initially, it was primarily a distributor of electronic parts and a consultant in the use of microprocessor technologies. The global headquarters is in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. Acer purchased Texas Instruments' mobile PC (laptop) division in 1997.

In 2000, Acer spun off its manufacturing operation as Wistron Corporation, to focus itself on branding business. In deciding to support the sales of its product lines through specific marketing activities that best utilise distribution channels, Acer grew worldwide while its labour force contracted. In 2002, the pan Acer Group employed 39,000 people supporting dealers and distributors in more than 100 countries.[citation needed] Revenues reached US$12.9 billion that year.[citation needed] By 2005, Acer employed 7,800 people throughout the world while maintaining a global sales and service network. Revenues were US$4.9 billion in 2003[4] and US$11.31 billion in 2006. Acer's North American market share slipped over the past few years while the European market share has gone up.[5]

In Europe, Acer mounted an association with the Ferrari Formula 1 Team. Prior to this they were associated with Prost Grand Prix in 2001 and the BAR-Honda team in 2002. Their sponsorship of Prost was intensive - buying the naming rights to the engine (which was also a Ferrari). Throughout the 2001 season the team were referred to as Prost-Acer. After Prost folded, Acer sponsored the BAR team, but in a much smaller way. Acer offer a popular line of premium laptops and LCD monitors with Ferrari branding. It has recently broadened the scope of its relationship with Ferrari by announcing it will sponsor the Formula One team until 2008. Acer has recently introduced the Ferrari line of products to North America, and rolled out a Ferrari-branded line of PDA devices.

Acer ranks as the world's No. 3 branded PC vendor behind the Hewlett Packard Company and Dell Inc, recently claiming the No.3 rank from Lenovo. [6] It has surpassed Dell in worldwide notebook shipments, becoming the world's No. 2 branded notebook vendor.[7]

But it has recently lost its 2nd position to Dell to become 3rd only by a small margin. Moreover Acer will put renewed efforts in its newly acquired brands to regain its place. [8]

In September 2008, Acer surpassed HP and Dell over worldwide notebook shipment. [9]

On August 27, 2007, Acer announced plans to acquire U.S. based rival Gateway Inc. for US$710 million. J.T. Wang, the company's chairman, said in a statement that the acquisition "completes Acer's global footprint, by strengthening our U.S. presence."[10] In January 2008, Acer announced that it had acquired a controlling interest of 75% of Packard Bell.[11]

Controversy and criticism
Acer has been the subject of lawsuits, notably from its rival, Hewlett-Packard. According to the lawsuit, Acer was infringing numerous technological patents, including power management in notebooks. Unleashed that Acer obtained patent designs which are registered by HP, without any approval and agreement. HP has filed damage claim of 3.2 Billion U.S. dollars against Acer for the infringement of patents rights. [12]

Acer America Corporation has previously had an unsatisfactory record with the United States Better Business Bureau. It is currently awaiting re-evaluation.

from :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_Inc.

How to delete files and folders

First Method

This is the easiest method to delete files and folders in Windows.

1. Normally in windows XP, you can view the hidden files and folders using the path, Tool>Folder Options>View, and then check the “Show hidden files and folders" radio box. But sometime due to some spyware/trojan attacks, this radio box is unchecked automatically and you could not show the system hidden files and folders.

Follow the given steps to visible the hidden files and folders:

To edit the computer registry, first you should log onto your computer with administrative rights.

Click Start button and type regedit in Run option then press Enter for next.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Advanced\Folde r\Hidden\SHOWALL

Now in right side panel, double click on the DWORD value “CheckedValue", here a small dialog box will appear with the title “Edit Dword Value".

To modify the “Value data" information as DWORD Value to 1 then click on Ok button to finish the process.
<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; To partition a master hard disk, you will use the fdisk command. Fdisk is a DOS and Windows utility that is used to partition a hard disk, which is necessary before high- level formatting.

Below are the complete instructions to walk you through the process of creating partitions on your hard drive.

1.) Insert the Startup disk in the floppy disk drive, restart your computer. When the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup menu is displayed, select the Start computer without CD-ROM support menu option, and then press Enter.

At a command prompt, type fdisk, and then press Enter.

2.) Do you wish to enable large disk support?

Press Y and then press Enter. This will enable the FAT32 file system

3.) After you press Enter, the following fdisk options menu is displayed:

1. Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive
2. Set active partition
3. Press 1 to select the Create Primary DOS Partition menu option, and then press Enter.

6.) After you press Enter, you receive the following message: Do you wish to use the maximum available size for primary DOS partition?

A.) After you receive this message, use the following method:

B.) Press Y if you want all of the space on the hard disk to be assigned to drive C, press Y, and then press Enter. Go to Step 7

C.) Press N if you do not want all of the space on the hard disk to be assigned to drive C.

a.) And by adding some of the awesome extensions available out there, the browser just gets better and better.

But look under the hood, and there are a bunch of hidden (and some not-so-secret) tips and tricks available that will crank Firefox up and pimp your browser. Make it faster, cooler, more efficient. Get to be a Jedi master with the following cool Firefox tricks.

1) More screen space. Make your icons small. Go to View - Toolbars - Customize and check the “Use small icons” box.

2) Smart keywords. If there’s a search you use a lot (let’s say IMDB.com’s people search), this is an awesome tool that not many people use. Right-click on the search box, select “Add a Keyword for this search”, give the keyword a name and an easy-to-type and easy-to-remember shortcut name (let’s say “actor”) and save it. Now, when you want to do an actor search, go to Firefox’s address bar, type “actor” and the name of the actor and press return. Instant search! You can do this with any search box.

3) Keyboard shortcuts. This is where you become a real Jedi. It just takes a little while to learn these, but once you do, your browsing will be super fast. Here are some of the most common (and my personal favs):

* Spacebar (page down)
* Shift-Spacebar (page up)
* Ctrl+F (find)
* Alt-N (find next)
* Ctrl+D (bookmark page)
* Ctrl+T (new tab)
* Ctrl+K (go to search box)
* Ctrl+L (go to address bar)
* Ctrl+= (increase text size)
* Ctrl+- (decrease text size)
* Ctrl-W (close tab)
* F5 (reload)
* Alt-Home (go to home page)

4) Auto-complete. This is another keyboard shortcut, but it’s not commonly known and very useful. Go to the address bar (Control-L) and type the name of the site without the “www” or the “.com”. Let’s say “google”. Then press Control-Enter, and it will automatically fill in the “www” and the “.com” and take you there - like magic! For .net addresses, press Shift-Enter, and for .org addresses, press Control-Shift-Enter.

5) Tab navigation. Instead of using the mouse to select different tabs that you have open, use the keyboard. Here are the shortcuts:

* Ctrl+Tab (rotate forward among tabs)
* Ctrl+Shft+Tab (rotate to the previous tab)
* Ctrl+1-9 (choose a number to jump to a specific tab)

6) Mouse shortcuts. Sometimes you’re already using your mouse and it’s easier to use a mouse shortcut than to go back to the keyboard. Master these cool ones:

* Middle click on link (opens in new tab)
* Shift-scroll down (previous page)
* Shift-scroll up (next page)
* Ctrl-scroll up (decrease text size)
* Ctrl-scroll down (increase text size)
* Middle click on a tab (closes tab)

7) Delete items from address bar history. Firefox’s ability to automatically show previous URLs you’ve visited, as you type, in the address bar’s drop-down history menu is very cool. But sometimes you just don’t want those URLs to show up (I won’t ask why). Go to the address bar (Ctrl-L), start typing an address, and the drop-down menu will appear with the URLs of pages you’ve visited with those letters in them. Use the down-arrow to go down to an address you want to delete, and press the Delete key to make it disappear.

8) User chrome. If you really want to trick out your Firefox, you’ll want to create a UserChrome.css file and customize your browser. It’s a bit complicated to get into here, but check out this tutorial.

9) Create a user.js file. Another way to customize Firefox, creating a user.js file can really speed up your browsing. You’ll need to create a text file named user.js in your profile folder (see this to find out where the profile folder is) and see this example user.js file that you can modify. Created by techlifeweb.com, this example explains some of the things you can do in its comments.

10) about:config. The true power user’s tool, about.config isn’t something to mess with if you don’t know what a setting does. You can get to the main configuration screen by putting about:config in the browser’s address bar. See Mozillazine’s about:config tips and screenshots.

11) Add a keyword for a bookmark. Go to your bookmarks much faster by giving them keywords. Right-click the bookmark and then select Properties. Put a short keyword in the keyword field, save it, and now you can type that keyword in the address bar and it will go to that bookmark.

12) Speed up Firefox. If you have a broadband connection (and most of us do), you can use pipelining to speed up your page loads. This allows Firefox to load multiple things on a page at once, instead of one at a time (by default, it’s optimized for dialup connections). Here’s how:

* Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Type “network.http” in the filter field, and change the following settings (double-click on them to change them):
* Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
* Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
* Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to a number like 30. This will allow it to make 30 requests at once.
* Also, right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

13) Limit RAM usage. If Firefox takes up too much memory on your computer, you can limit the amount of RAM it is allowed to us. Again, go to about:config, filter “browser.cache” and select “browser.cache.disk.capacity”. It’s set to 50000, but you can lower it, depending on how much memory you have. Try 15000 if you have between 512MB and 1GB ram.

14) Reduce RAM usage further for when Firefox is minimized. This setting will move Firefox to your hard drive when you minimize it, taking up much less memory. And there is no noticeable difference in speed when you restore Firefox, so it’s definitely worth a go. Again, go to about:config, right-click anywhere and select New-> Boolean. Name it “config.trim_on_minimize” and set it to TRUE. You have to restart Firefox for these settings to take effect.

15) Move or remove the close tab button. Do you accidentally click on the close button of Firefox’s tabs? You can move them or remove them, again through about:config. Edit the preference for “browser.tabs.closeButtons”. Here are the meanings of each value:

* 0: Display a close button on the active tab only
* 1:(Default) Display close buttons on all tabs
* 2:Don’t display any close buttons
* 3:Display a single close button at the end of the tab bar (Firefox 1.x behavior)

Removing Cookies in Internet Explorer for Windows

- Close all open Internet Explorer Windows

- Click on the 'start' button

- Move up to 'Find' and click on 'Files and Folders'

- When the new window appears, type in the domain name of the board you are using into the 'containing text' field. Reset the icon cache

-Delete IconCache.db from your profile directory (usually C:/documents and settings/username/local settings/application data)
Windows will automatically recreate it

Use this if you're experiencing lag as you browse through your start menu or your desktop icons dissapear and reappear regularly

2. Turn off the indexing service

-Go to start, click run, and type in services.msc and hit enter. right click indexing service, click properties, and set startup type to manual.

Windows indexes all of your files - useless if you don't use the search tool that often + google desktop works much better than windows search

3. Reduce menu delay
-Go to run, type in regedit, find hkey_current_user\control panel\desktop and select MenuShowDelay. right click it and select modify and set the number to around 100 or so, or a number that suits your tastes.

Windows actually controls how fast or slow menus load, why not speed it up?

4. Speed up shutting down

-First, Open up regedit using Run from the control panel
1. Change HKEY_CURRENT_USER\CONTROL PANEL\DESKTOP\WaitToKillAppTimeout from 20000 to 1000
2. Change HKEY_CURRENT_USER\CONTROL PANEL\DESKTOP\HungAppTimeout from 5000 to 1000
3. Change HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTRO L\WaitToKillServiceTimeout from 20000 to 1000
4. Change HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\CONTROL PANEL\DESKTOP\WaitToKillAppTimeout from 20000 to 1000

This reduces the time window waits before killing apps that are not responding - you'd just close them normally anyway.

5. Convert FAT32 volumes to NTFS (Hard Drives)

NTFS is faster, more secure, and is more stable.

Steps:

1. Back up the drive's data
2. Click start and Run, type cmd and press enter to open a command prompt window
3. Type vol c: and press enter to find and note the volume label of partition.
(This assumes you're converting the C drive, replace it with the correct letter if you're converting another drive)
4. Type convert c: /fs:ntfs and press enter
5. When prompted, enter the volume you noted in step 3
6. Answer "Y" to the remaining question. The system will reboot and convert the volume.
The first reboot after conversion might take longer than usual, but this will only happen once.

6. Disable redundant 8.3 file names

1. Open regedit again
2. Set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTRO L\FILESYSTEM\NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreatrion to 1 and restart

8.3 filenames are only used by DOS and '95 programs. if you don't have 'em, get rid of the filenames.

7. Speed up searching by disabling ZIP file searching

1. Click start, open run, type in cmd and hit enter.

2. Type in "regsvr32c:\windows\system32\zipflrd.dll /u" and press enter. To re-enable. simply retype it without the "/u"

Searching zip files can take forever, so if you don't need it, don't use it.

100 Keyboard Shortcut

This allows machines passing the information onwards on behalf of the sender to know where to send it next, and for the machine receiving the information to know that it is the intended destination.

Here are some ways to find an IP address:

:arrow: Directly connect to the target (send/receive a file, or connect to talk over the computer phone) on MSN, AIM or any other chat server that allows direct connections. While the direct connection is established, go to DOS ("Start - Run - cmd" or "Start - Programs - Accessories - Command Prompt") and type:
netstat -n

Look in Foreign address, look for an IP that is connected to you on this ports 6891-6900

:arrow: Get the target to send you an e-mail. Make sure your header options are on full (advanced):

Hotmail: "Options - Mail Display Settings" and check the box Advanced next to "Message Headings"

Yahoo: "Mail Options - General Preferences"

Check box "Show all headers on incoming messages" next to the "Headers:" category.

Their IP will be listed in the headers of the e-mail.

:arrow: If you and the target are chatting on IRC, type: "/dns username"

:arrow: IM them this message over a chat:
http://127.0.0.1 (replace the 127.0.0.1 with your IP)
or
ftp://yourip
And intrigue them to click on it, one good way of getting them to click it is to tell the perverts it's a great free porn site! lol
Make sure you have a firewall set up so that any connections made will be logged, so when they click it you're firewall will tell you of the connection attempt and will log their IP.

:arrow: Set up a free webserver and get an IP logger of some sort and have them enter your site.

Theres a lot ways to get an IP this is just few of the examples. If you are depended on Yahoo Messenger.The port to look out for is 5101. Chat clients differ on the service port they use depending on what protocol they are running on.

LanGrabber v1.0

LanGrabber is offline LAN (local area network) downloader. Messing and editing the registry is always dangerous, as any erroneous or careless registry editing may cause irrecoverable or irreversible system damage, worst may come to the extent the computer cannot be boot up properly anymore.

For user who doesn’t want to run or use Registry Editor at all, or for people who is using a shared computer and want to disable and stop all or some users from using Registry Editor, Windows operating system such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2003 and 2008 allows administrator to use group policy to disable the Registry Editor.

To disable the Registry Editor for currently logged on user:

1. Click Start -> Run, and then type regedit (type in Start Search for Windows Vista and 7), and press Enter.
2. Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies
3. Create a New -> Key named System.
4. At the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System registry branch, create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value (REG_DWORD) named as DisableRegistryTools.
5. Set the value data for DisableRegistryTools to 1 to disable the Registry Editor.

Warning: Before enable to blocking of Registry Editor, think careful as once the setting is enabled, user will lock himself or herself out of the registry, and will not be able to use Regedit to undo the change. However, there are workarounds to re-enable the Registry Editor after disabling.

Note: It’s also possible to disable the Registry Editor for all user accounts on the PC by creating and changing the value of DisableRegistryTools to 1 in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System registry key.

Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator

Alternatively, users using operating system with Local Group Policy Editor (GPedit.msc) can navigate to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System and locate Prevent access to registry editing tools option to disable the Registry Editor access.

How to Enable Task Manager in Windows XP

The Windows XP Task Manager is a powerful tool that controls Windows' vital functions, as well as the presence of applications in system memory. With the Task Manager, you can open and control whichever processes are installed on your computer. You can also control logins. As it is such a powerful tool, there are times when you'll want to enable or disable the task manager for use by specific profiles.

Enable Task Manager in Windows XP
Step1
Start Windows in your normal manner.

Step2
Click "Start." Then highlight and click "Run."

Step3
Type "REGEDIT" into the text bar and press "Enter."

Step4
Navigate through the registry, looking for the following directory: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies\ System."

Step5
Right-click on the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" and click "New" from the context menu to include a new string. This is only necessary when the necessary directory is not currently present in the registry. By default, Windows XP Home Edition does not include the necessary directory string.

Step6
Click on the "DisableTaskMgr" phrase and delete it. This is the simplest way to do it, but it makes it more of a challenge to repair in the future. You will need to manually reenter the string if you didn't back up first.

Step7
Change the numbers in the boolean section of the entry from one to zero. This will enable the Task Manager in Windows XP. Note that the zero is essentially equivalent to a positive entry in this regard, as the initial string is a negative.

Step8
Change the string manually from the "Run" window of the Start Menu, without having to access the Registry Editor. Simply type "REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f" into the text field and press "Enter."

By eHow Computers Editor

Disabling or enabling Windows XP System Restore

Turn off Windows XP System Restore
1 Click Start.
2 Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3 On the System Restore tab, check Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on
all drives.
If you do not see the System Restore tab, you are not logged on to Windows as an
Administrator.
4 Click Apply.
5 When you see the confirmation message, click Yes.
6 Click OK.

Turn on Windows XP System Restore
1 Click Start.
2 Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3 On the System Restore tab, uncheck Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore
on all drives.
If you do not see the System Restore tab, you are not logged on to Windows as an
Administrator.
4 Click Apply.
5 When you see the confirmation message, click Yes.
6 Click OK.

-->
